Fiat to unveil new Panda Cross and Freemont Cross in Geneva

: Italian carmaker Fiat has announced its lineup for the upcoming 2014 Geneva Motor Show. The company will present the world debut of the Panda Cross and Freemont Cross at the show.

The Panda Cross also offers some AWD features for off-roaders. Its 'Terrain Control' has three different driving modes- AUTO, LOCK and HILL DESCENT.
AUTO - Automatic distribution of drive between the two axles in accordance with the grip of the road surface
LOCK - The four-wheel drive is always active for optimal off-road use, with distribution of torque among the four wheels, braking the wheels that are losing grip (or slip more than the others), and thus transferring the drive to those with the most grip.
HILL DESCENT - For optimum handling of particularly steep hill descents or when going down extremely bumpy routes.
The front fascia of the Panda Cross features a new bumper, which boasts a generous skid plate in a satin titanium colour with a design of holes which reinterprets the Panda's characteristic "squircle" motif. Tow hooks with an immediately recognisable new design in a brilliant red place emphasis on its off-road character. It gets new headlights and new fog lights integrated with the logo holder bonnet trim, and new DRLs with LED technology, built into the skid plate. The 15" alloy wheels sport a 5-spoke V design and a burnished metal finish.
Two engine versions are available, both with Start&Stop standard and boasting higher performance than the versions on the Panda 4x4: the 80 HP 1.3 MultiJet II turbodiesel and 90 HP 0.9 TwinAir Turbo petrol, the latter with specific 6-speed transmission with shortened first gear.

: Eager to accelerate its learning curve in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), Hyundai Motorsport has today announced that three Hyundai i20 WRC cars will be entered into Rally de Portugal, round four of the 2014 FIA World Rally Championship, in April.

The one-day event will be held on Saturday 29th March at the iconic Fafe-Lameirinha stage – which was part of the classic Rally de Portugal – and attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators each year.
Team Principal Michel Nandan commented: “Having three cars at Rally de Portugal will be very positive for us and it will allow us to continue our data collection and to accumulate more mileage in our debut WRC season. The time has changed, Mercedes-Benz and BMW seem aggressive with their strategies and are ready with a series of new cars and facelifts for the Indian market. Audi India, too, felt a need of new product to counter the other two. While Mercedes-Benz and BMW are betting on their premium hatchbacks, Audi opts for different path to capture the major chunk of luxury car segment in India. Like Mercedes-Benz and BMW, Audi already has A1 premium hatchback which is currently on sale in several international markets. However, the company gambled on A3 compact premium sedan for the Indian market. In simple words we can say that like Mercedes opened a new segment with A-Class, Audi is all set to start a new segment with its A3.

Volkswagen Golf gets new GTE variant

: Volkswagen has unveiled the first pictures of the Golf GTE – a new plug-in hybrid version of the multi-award-winning Golf hatchback that combines the benefits of electric mobility with the dynamics of a Golf GTI.

The Golf GTE is due to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. It provides the fifth variety of drive type for the Golf, which is now available with petrol, diesel, natural gas (not in the UK), electric and hybrid power. Where ‘GT’ stands for ‘Gran Tourismo’, ‘I’ stands for ‘Injection’, ‘D’ for Diesel and ‘E’ for Electricity.

The Golf GTE is driven by two engines: a 1.4-litre 150 PS TSI direct-injection petrol engine and a 102 PS electric motor. Together, they combine to produce power of 204 PS and a theoretical range of around 580 miles. Using the electric motor alone, the GTE is capable of speeds of 130kph. With the TSI engine as well, the Golf GTE can sprint from zero to 100kph in 7.6 seconds and on to 217kph. Torque is a remarkable 350Nm.
In pure electric mode (activated at the press of a button), the Golf GTE can travel up to 31 miles, depending on conditions, and the electric power can also be saved – for example when driving to a zero-emissions zone. The 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery can be charged in around three and a half hours from a domestic mains outlet, or two and a half hours from a domestic wallbox. The battery weighs 120 kg, giving the GTE a total kerbweight of 1,520 kg.
The Golf GTE uses a six-speed DSG gearbox with a triple-clutch system specially developed for hybrid vehicles. The electric motor is integrated into the gearbox housing, while further hybrid components include power electronics and a charger. An electro-mechanical brake servo and an electric air conditioning compressor make for energy-efficient braking and air conditioning.

The company now has 304 facilities in 164 Indian cities.
