The Suzuki Alto 1.0 SZ is one of the cheapest cars you can buy, but is it good value?
Three-cylinder petrol engines are all the rage these days, but the cheapest city cars have had them for years. The Suzuki Alto for one; it’s been available with a 67bhp, 1.0-litre example since it was launched in 2009.
Little has changed since then – the Alto looks the same as it did, with a model update in 2012 giving it new exterior and interior colours only. It also added variable valve timing to the engine, dropping CO2 emissions below the all-important 100g/km barrier. EU Combined fuel economy went up to 65.7mpg.
The biggest change has been the price, because since last summer Suzuki has been selling the Alto “VAT-free”, which makes it one of the cheapest cars on sale. As part of that deal (which is due to expire at the end of March) this entry-level model costs £5,999 rather than £7,199, making it just £4 more expensive than the UK’s cheapest car - the Dacia Sandero Access.
