Long-term report: Audi A3 2.0TDI SE

James Foxall reports on life with his Audi A3 long-term test car after more than 10,000 miles.

The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) took the words right out of my mouth. The Audi A3 2.0 TDI’s stated 68.9mpg figure might not be wrong.
But in real world driving conditions it’s very hard to achieve. I have had economy nudging the mid 60s. But that was once. And my driving had to be so slow and cautious, it was verging on unsafe.
More often than not, particularly since the mileage passed 10,000, this A3’s mpg has been in the early 50s which is acceptable. I was expecting at least that on a long run down to the French Alps in early April. But on the 1600-mile round trip we only averaged 48.6mpg, probably courtesy of the added weight from the ski kit we were carrying.
