Life is full of surprises, like discovering how enjoyable a Passat Alltrack, the jacked-up, 4x4 version of the Passat estate, is. Who would have thought a bog-standard 2.0-litre diesel engine in an estate would make for such a rewarding drive?
The Alltrack only comes with a 2.0-litre diesel, in 138bhp form with a six-speed manual gearbox, and 167bhp with the six-speed dual-clutch auto transmission. We had the manual version (gears a little crowded in the gate, resulting in a bit of hunting for the right slot) with the lower power output. The engine’s sprightly performance belies the car’s weight. Easy to place on the road, light to steer, nice smooth ride, progressive braking… what’s not to like?
The interior is smart, with black fabric seats that have Alcantara panels, a minimalist facia reminiscent of BMWs with a horizontal silver strip running its length and an analogue clock set in it, and stainless steel doorsill strips imprinted with an Alltrack logo.
